Karolina Muchova vs Jennifer Brady Predictions

Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova has made a trademark of comebacks at this tournament. She pulled off another to shock World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and reach her first Grand Slam semifinal.
Jennifer Brady has been in this position once before, at the US Open in 2020, and it took eventual champion Naomi Osaka three sets to stop her.

  • Karolina Muchova has won 5 of her last 6 matches in straight sets.
  • Karolina Muchova has conceded 10+ break points in 3 of her last 5 matches.
  • Jennifer Brady has won 8 of her last 10 matches in straight sets.
  • Jennifer Brady has covered the -6.5 games handicap in 7 of 8 her matches in 2021.

Head to Head

Karolina Muchova leads the head-to-head with Jennifer Brady 1-0.
Muchova beat Brady narrowly 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) in Prague in 2019. However, this result may not be too relevant for two reasons. Firstly, that match was on clay, neither player’s best surface but a much more familiar and comfortable one for Muchova (who made the Prague final that week).
Secondly, Brady has been a much better player since improving her fitness dramatically over the 2019-20 off-season.

Karolina Muchova Form

Muchova has yet to lose a match in 2021, although she has given two walkovers in the weeks leading up to the Australian Open due to an abdominal injury.
The 24-year-old Czech has beaten two top-six seeds to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal. She beat Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 7-5 despite trailing 1-5 in the second set, then coming back from a set down against top seed Ashleigh Barty.
Barty led by a set and a break before a medical time-out for Muchova changed the complexion of the match.
Muchova’s game combines an aggressive forehand with a slice backhand and she loves to attack the net. But unless she serves superbly she will be in danger of being overpowered by Brady.

Jennifer Brady Form

Jennifer Brady was one of the revelations of 2020. Having shaken up her team and pre-season routine, she won her first WTA Tour title in Lexington and went on to reach the US Open semifinals.
Brady’s improvement is clearly here to stay. She has won seven of the eight matches she has won in 2021 in straight sets, beating Aliona Bolsova, Madison Brengle, Kaja Juvan and Donna Vekic to reach the quarterfinals.
Up against her compatriot Jessica Pegula, Brady dropped her first set of the tournament; she also conceded multiple breaks for the first time in the tournament. But she dominated after dropping that first set for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.
So much fitter than she used to be, Brady unleashes her devastating power to full effect now. Muchova will try to neutralise her power with the slice, but lack of experience is going to hurt the Czech and Brady will not give her the opportunity to work her way into the match.
